At Golborne High School, we intend to build a sense of time and place through a rigorous and ambitious History curriculum. History is a critical discipline and our aim is to inspire all pupils to become lifelong learners of History.

Our pupils will encounter experiences with the past through enquiry-based learning, the ‘big’ questions that underpin themes and ideas that become more complex over time. Key concepts are revisited in a variety of different contexts through key stage 3 to key stage 4, so that our pupils not only enjoy a knowledge-rich historical education but aspire to become historians of the future.

We build a framework of local, national and international history for our pupils to immerse themselves in through research-based, quality-first teaching. Abstract themes such a power, monarchy, democracy and diversity, underpin significant events that have shaped our global community. It is through this historical scholarship that we intend our pupils to leave Golborne High School with a rigorous sense of who they are, the events that shaped the past and how history can impact their future. We want them to become lifelong learners so that our passion for history continues for future generations.

KS3 History

Our pupils are taken on a chronological, diverse journey from the Stone Age to Modern Britain. We cover a wide range of local History looking specifically at the implications of The Reformation and Industrialisation in Golborne. Key highlights from each year group that are rare to find in many other History Departments across the country are:

  • Year 7: African Civilisations and Mana Musa, Islamic and Christian worlds, challenging Stone Age stereotypes with Skara Brae.

  • Year 8: The impact of the British Empire on Hong Kong, Ireland and India, an in-depth reading focus of David Ousolga's bestselling book, 'Black and British.'

  • Year 9: The rise and fall of extremism in Europe, The Civil Rights movement and its implications today, Postwar Britain; The Windrush generation, and twenty first century challenges with Terrorism.

KS4 History

At Golborne, our department takes great pride in our excellent results at GCSE. We have consistently performed above the average of all other AQA centres and lead the way in school with or percentage of pupils achieving Grades 7+ at GCSE. This is only reflective of the passion, expertise and ambition that our staff hold for our aspiring historians. With several AQA examiners in the department, we have the perfect environment to ensure success for all.

Year 10: Our pupils delve into the History of medicine through time, looking at 1000 years of medical progress. They then move on to our topic on interwar conflict, understanding the true causes of WW2. Here, pupils will make fantastic links to their previous learning in Year 9.

Year 11: Our Pupils continue their studies in the modern period, completing a depth study of Germany from 1888-1945. This takes them on a journey from Democracy to Dictatorship. Our pupils end their GCSE studies with a period study of Elizabethan England. Here, we give them a huge confidence boost with expert teaching of a 'pre seen' component.
