This year, all Year 10 pupils at GHS will take part in a week of work experience. This valuable opportunity will allow them to explore the world of work and develop key employability skills. All pupils must secure a work experience placement for the week beginning 16th March 2026.
Pupils are encouraged to arrange placements with local employers to gain real-world experience and build essential life skills such as communication, teamwork, and independence. Placements can also be arranged through family or friends.
Many employers in the Wigan area regularly support work experience. If a pupil needs help finding or approaching a placement, they should speak to their tutor, who will be happy to provide support.
Placement approval is subject to the following criteria:
· The placement must be located within 25 miles of Golborne High School.
· The business must have up-to-date Employer Liability Insurance.
· There must be more than one staff member employed at the business, with at least one additional person present on site at all times. One-to-one working arrangements with pupils are not permitted.
· The business must have a valid and approved health and safety assessment.
· The business must operate from a fixed location and must not be mobile in nature.
To support this process and ensure each placement is safe and appropriate, we work with an external company, Tailored Education, who carry out short site visits where needed. These visits typically last around 15 minutes and are used to confirm that the environment and surroundings are suitable, health and safety measures are in place and there is appropriate supervision and guidance for pupils. During the visit, a check is also done with the employer to confirm that they have Employer Liability Insurance (ELI) and Public Liability Insurance (PLI) in place.
