Design Technology and Food Curriculum Journey

At Golborne High School our aim is to inspire creativity and enthuse our students with an appreciation of the modern designed and made world.

Throughout design and technology lessons, pupils will experience a broad range of creative and practical opportunities in order to develop their independence and confidence to solve real and relevant problems.

Students will be equipped with the knowledge, understanding and practical skills to engage successfully and independently in the process of designing and making. They will learn about new and emerging technologies as well developing an awareness of social, cultural and sustainability issues linked to design and technology.

As part of their work in food technology, pupils will be taught how to cook and apply the principles of nutrition and healthy eating, instilling a love of cooking that will open the door to one of the great expressions of human creativity. Learning how to cook is a crucial life skill that enables students to feed themselves and others affordably and well, now and in later life.

We have designed a curriculum that will stimulate and ignite our pupils with a deep love of the subject through the highest standards of teaching and learning. The latest technologies and innovations are used along with current news as well as well-resourced workshops and food technology rooms.

Design and technology naturally lends itself to problem solving and this is exploited at every opportunity in order for our pupils to develop the necessary cultural capital to succeed later in life. Real life contexts are used to provide pupils with opportunity to develop knowledge and skills, and practical activities are used to enhance the theoretical understanding.

Key Stage 4

At GCSE pupils will study AQA Design and Technology, BTEC Tech Award in Construction and / or WJEC L1/2 Award in Hospitality and Catering. Our extra-curricular clubs further strengthen pupils’ knowledge of industry and the wider world, including careers linked to engineering, construction and the food industry.

Our pupils will develop confidence to question and explore the impact that technology has on the world and society around them. They will be aware that design and technology is integral to enhance the human world. They will be encouraged to see the big picture, try out new ideas and apply skills and problem solve in imaginative ways.
