Class of 2019 - Even more strong passes than 2018 across all subjects!

Congratulations to our Class of 2019 for their performance in this year’s GCSE examinations. Once again, at Golborne High School, our incredible pupils have made exceptional progress, gaining even more strong passes [5+] across all subjects!

Thanks to the hard work and resilience of pupils, the dedication and professionalism of staff and the unwavering support of parents Golborne pupils achieved outstanding results, which exceeded all expectations, and once again look to be well above National standards..

Pupils achieved an impressive 76% Grade 9-4 in English and Maths, which is a result of 92% Grade 9-4 in English and 80% Grade 9-4 in Maths. 57% of pupils achieved “strong passes” in English and Maths with 82% in English and 60% in Maths. An incredible 23% of pupils gained 5 or more qualifications at grade 7 or above and a significant number of grade 9s were achieved across the board particularly in core subjects.

A significant number of Ebacc subjects achieved strong performances. 60% of pupils were entered for the Ebacc suite of qualifications and gained an average point score of 4.91 which is even better than last year and predicted to be well above National averages. In French and Spanish over 30 pupils gained a grade 7 or above and 93% gained a grade 4 or above, once again this is expected to be well above National average.

These results place our pupils in the strongest position to secure places at Winstanley, John Rigby, Wigan and Leigh College and to gain highly competitive apprenticeships.

A significant number of Ebacc subjects achieved strong performances. In Modern Foreign Languages 87% of all pupils entered for French or Spanish achieved a grade 4 or above, with 19% securing grade 7 or above. In Humanities subjects pupils achieved 70% grade 4 or above (History 70%, Geography 67%). 72% of pupils achieved 2 or more Science GCSEs at grade 4 or above with 91% of those pupils who were entered for three separate sciences achieving grade 4 or above.

Pupil’s success also included more creative / practical subjects with 100% of pupils achieving a grade 4 or above in Drama and Art Photography and 73% achieving grade 5 or above in Drama and 82% in Art Photography. Pupils also performed significantly above national comparisons in the suite of vocational qualifications that pupils studied.

There have been many exceptional individual performances in terms of both attainment and progress. Special mention to the pupils who collectively achieved 58 grade 9s (A*s) across all subjects. The Grade 9 is designed to distinguish those amongst the very best students in the entire country with approximately only 2% of the national cohort achieving this grade.

There were some particularly impressive performances from J Williams, K Whelan, A Doyle, E Ogden, H Bond, H Griffiths, N Smith, L Briscoe, C Thomas, K Anderson, M Ridge, C Williams, L Irvine, H O’Brien, L Morley and A Davies who achieved a remarkable 49 grade 9s between them – what an achievement!

We are incredibly proud of the results of all of the pupils in Year 11 who, despite the pressure of completing approximately 27 exams per pupil, showed resilience, confidence and retained their sense of humour! They are an absolute credit to the school and they leave Golborne with the very best wishes of the staff and the Governors. Well done!
